ただいまご紹介をいただきました前田です。
My name is Maeda and I have just been introduced to you.

　この度、図らずも「明るい社会づくり運動全国協議会」の会長として、不肖ご承認をいただきましたが、皆さんと一緒に今後長く且つ深く、この会の発展に乗り出し、この会を基盤として、人々の心の再建と国際社会の中にも運動が浸透することを期するところであります。
I have unexpectedly been accepted as the chairman of the National Council for the Promotion of a Brighter Society, but I will continue to work together with you to develop this association for a long time and deeply. We hope that the movement will rebuild the hearts of the people of Japan and that the movement will penetrate the international community as well.

皆さんのご協力を背景に、全力を尽くす所存でおりますので、今後のご指導ご協力をお願い申し上げたい。

さて、大平前首相の国民葬は、国際的規模の葬儀であった。元首相吉田氏の国葬、佐藤氏の国民的葬儀は、この度の大平首相に比べると三分の一にも達しないものであった。
Now, former Prime Minister Ohira's national funeral was one on an international scale. The state funeral for former Prime Minister Yoshida and the national funeral for Sato were less than one-third of those for Prime Minister Ohira.

この葬儀の規模が何を意味するのか。東京サミットでの成果、国際協力と平和を、自ら先頭に立ってやられたという点で高く評価された。

国際社会における日本の地位を高めるには、日本の対外的関係の根本的改善を考え直す必要がある。こうした時代において、私どもは問題点をきわめつつ、明るい社会づくり運動を展開すべきと思う。

日本の宗教界も、一つのイズムに固執していたら、世界平和を確立することはできない。

本運動の提唱者庭野先生は、宗教界での国際連合（世界宗教者平和会議）をつくられており、今の国際世界における、一番大切なことをおやりになっていると思う。
Mr. Niwano, the advocate of this movement, created the United Nations (World Religions for Peace Conference) in the religious world, and I believe he is doing the most important thing in the international world today.

私は国際政治の歴史、外交史を専門としているが、世界の歴史をみると、平和な時代より戦争の時代の方が長い。私は世界中の戦争をつぶさに兄てきたが、とくにヒットラーの部隊が入ってくるのを見届けてから、逃げ戻った時の印象は、戦争ぐらい人類に不幸を与えるアクシデントはないと思った。
I specialize in the history of international politics and diplomatic history, and when I look at the history of the world, there have been more periods of war than periods of peace. I have closely followed wars around the world, and when I saw Hitler's troops enter and then ran back, my impression was that there is no accident that brings as much misfortune to humanity as war.

いかなる意味においても、私の経験を通じて、戦争をなくす社会をつくらなければならない、という確信に満ちた気持ちだった。私は、今日の憲法はどうしても改正すべきではない、という考え方を持っている。なぜかといえば、下手に改正すれば、われわれの身のまわりが再び戦前にもどる恐れがあるからである。
In every sense of the word, my experience has made me convinced that we must create a society that eliminates war. I am of the opinion that today's Constitution should not be amended. The reason for this is that if the revisions are made poorly, there is a risk that the world around us will return to pre-war times.

戦争をなくすためには、現在の憲法を基盤として、強く確信をもって、これを守る。そして、世界平和のために貢献する外交のあり方、これを模索すべきではないか、ということが私の考え方である。外務省は、この手本をふまえながら、自衛隊が国際協力、平和維持のために寄与できる方向があるや否や、を研究している。
In order to eliminate war, we must build on the current Constitution and defend it with strong conviction. My thinking is that we should explore ways to conduct diplomacy that contribute to world peace. Based on this model, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is studying ways in which the Self-Defense Forces can contribute to international cooperation and peacekeeping.

私は大平さんが外相になられて以来、今日まで外務省の顧問としで協力している。この問題についても、われわれは経済力をほこるばかりでなく、国際社会に介入しながら、平和の永続的方向に全力を注ぐべきだと考えている。この点についても、庭野先生の宗教界における考え方と、立場は異なっても同じであることに、私は感銘を受けている。
I have been working with Mr. Ohira as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ever since he became Foreign Minister. Regarding this issue as well, I believe that we should not only show off our economic power, but also intervene in the international community and focus our efforts in the direction of lasting peace. On this point as well, I am impressed by the fact that Dr. Niwano's thinking in the religious world is the same even though his position is different.

宗教者の世界平和会議をもととして、永遠の平和を確立すること。これこそ一つの明るい社会づくり運動の最終目的ではないかと考えておる。
To establish eternal peace based on a world peace conference of religious people. I believe that this is the ultimate goal of the movement to create a brighter society.

私は国につくす道は、それぞれの分野において、得意とする方を通じて推進めるべきだと考えている。同時にこの明社運動は、提唱者である庭野先生の平和の原則にのっとってご協力申し上げることが、私の所信である。
I believe that the path to serving the country should be promoted through people who are good at their respective fields. At the same time, it is my belief that I will cooperate with this Meisha movement in accordance with the principles of peace proposed by its proponent, Professor Niwano.

明るい社会づくり運動を通してこの目標が達成されるならば、私共の願いを期待することができる。
If this goal can be achieved through a movement to create a brighter society, we can look forward to our hopes.

北海道旭川市出身。庁立旭川中学校を経て東京外語学校（現東京外国語大学）
ヨーロッパに留学、ローマ大学法科に学ぶ。
Born in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. After attending Asahikawa Junior High School, Tokyo School of Foreign Studies (currently Tokyo University of Foreign Studies)
Studied abroad in Europe and studied law at the University of Rome.


　第10代NHK会長 10th NHK Chairman
　財団法人国民政治協会会長、国語審議会会長、日本体操協会会長、
　国際政治協会会長、沖縄海洋博総プロデューサーなどを歴任。
　1976年勲一等瑞宝章、仏レジオンドヌール勲章、伊メリット勲章を受章。
Chairman of the National Political Association Foundation, Chairman of the Japanese Language Council, Chairman of the Japan Gymnastics Association,He has served as president of the International Politics Association and producer of the Okinawa Ocean Expo.

1983年12月17日、呼吸不全のため死去。享年77。
