From the perspective of Buddhist history, what is the initiative for creating a bright society advocated by Reverend Nikkyo Niwano?
私は、庭野日敬師が明るい社会づくり運動を提唱され、多くの人達の支持いただき,今日までその活動がくり返し継続されている事は、日本の歴史の流れの中でどのような意味を持つのか、持たないのかを、検証する事はとても大切な事だと常々考えています。
I have always thought that it is very important to examine what significance, or not, the fact that Reverend Niwano advocated the movement to create a brighter society, that it has been supported by many people, and that this activity has continued to this day has in the course of Japanese history.

So, this time I would like to introduce a passage in a book by Mr. Hidehiro Sato, former head of the National Taku Academy for Creating a Bright Society, in which he states something very important.

「個人」と「全体」の関係 － 理論的課題の克服
The relationship between the "individual" and the "whole" - overcoming theoretical challenges
仏教学者の見解によると、現在、仏教は信仰として日本に定着しているが、これからの仏教の課題として、仏教と社会・国家の在り方は、どう説明されていかねばならないのか、哲学的検証が必要だと云われている。
According to Buddhist scholars, Buddhism is now established as a faith in Japan, but a future challenge for Buddhism is that a philosophical examination is needed to determine how Buddhism should be related to society and the state.
「個人救済」の教えと言われる仏教が、社会とか「全体の救済」の理論として展開されていけるか、このような理論的課題が残されている事は、また多いなる楽しみもある。
There is also much to be excited about the fact that theoretical challenges remain, such as whether Buddhism, which is said to be a teaching of "individual salvation," can be developed into a theory of society or "collective salvation."
この頃、私は明るい社会づくり運動は、立正成佼会にとっても大きな役割と使命があることを強調していた。大教団である立正佼成会は、すでに社会的に無視できない存在となり、同時に同会の社会的責任も大きくなってきている。
Around this time, I was emphasizing that the movement to create a brighter society was also a major role and mission for Rissho Seikokai. As a large religious organization, Rissho Koseikai has already become a presence in society that cannot be ignored, and at the same time, the organization's social responsibilities have also grown.
社会的矛盾や苦悩が、個人や家庭に及ぼす時代になっており、同会の活動もこれまでのように貪、病、争、といわれる個人・家庭の苦悩に応えていく、いわゆる「個人苦」の対応から「社会苦」に対処できる目を拡げていかねばならなくなっている。
We live in an age in which social contradictions and suffering affect individuals and families, and the Association's activities must now broaden its scope from simply responding to individual and family suffering such as greed, illness, and conflict, to addressing "social suffering," rather than merely "individual suffering."
個から社会の救済への転換
Shift from individual to social salvation
これからは、個人だけでなく、個人の集合からなる、社会という「全体」に対応することが要請される。従って、社会の動向に対しでき得る限り、あらゆる角度からの厳密な検討を加え、社会の諸現象の本質を把握していく努力が必要となる。
From now on, we will be required to respond not only to individuals but to the "whole" that is society, which is made up of a collection of individuals. Therefore, we will need to make rigorous investigations of social trends from as many angles as possible and make efforts to grasp the essence of various social phenomena.
新しい社会建設に向けて
Towards the construction of a new society
明るい社会づくり運動を通して、あらゆる立場、関係者の人間性にふれ、共通の意識で共同のテーマに取り組んでいく行動に、社会人の一人として託された責務があろう。
Through the movement to create a brighter society, we have a responsibility as members of society to come into contact with the humanity of people from all walks of life and all stakeholders, and to work together on common themes with a common consciousness.
新しい社会建設に向けて、明るい社会づくり運動の推進力となっていくことが、これから特に宗教を奉ずる人の姿勢ではなかろうかと。
I believe that from now on, it will be up to those who practice religion, in particular, to become the driving force behind the movement to create a brighter society and to build a new one.
